We apprecaite your service! – Rush-In-2011 (257)
Best Stop – We had several neat encounters with people but the one we appreciated the most were the State Troopers we talked to. They would have taken a ride but were on OT because one of the National Guardsmen who was murdered earlier in the week in the Carson City shooting was being laid to rest. Apparently there were threats from protestors so they had to stay alert. We had a great day and have a lot more pics to share if you’d like to see them! What a GREAT idea this was…Hopefully there will be a 2nd annual.
Ralph DeLuco, my Patrol, and Nikki HD Girl – Canton Cycles Pete (245)
Best Stop – I stopped to see my friend Ralph DeLuco, former owner of Ural dealership Canton Cycles. I sold more than 40 Urals while working there. Ralph is now Parts and Service manager at Gengras Eurobike Triumph, BMW. Gengras is also a Harley dealer. HOGs made my UDF points easy, about five times over. Nikki, the dealership Harley girl took a ride with Ralph in my Ural.
Dorena Covered Bridge – Buckaroo (78)
Best Stop – Our best stop was the last stop. Not just because the long day was done. We had rushed to get a picture of an historic ranger cabin in the woods and as we came to it and jumped off to get a picture we were greeted by 2 ladies and a girl who were spending the night there. After explaining what we were doing we offered them a ride. The little girl was the only one that wanted to go. So, around the small driveway we spun. It was her first motorcycle ride and we were glad that we could give her a great experience. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful, if very long day.
Shark’s Cove, North Shore of Oahu – Otisanek (187)
Best Stop – Matsumoto’s Shave Ice in Haleiwa, Hawaii. We sat on the bike and watched the tourists watch us (apparently two girls on a Ural is a bit of an oddity here), then once we were done with our shave ice cones, we realized that I had run the tank to empty, and forgotten to fill up the gas can. We ended up walking a couple k’s to the nearest gas station to fill up, but in the end it was still the best stop of the day.
How the hell did the kid mess up his bike this time? – Schatzman (258)
Best Stop – Visiting Retired NH State Police Trooper Tom Bolton who was injured on a Ural last year.
– Lindy (26)
Best Stop – The best stop was the old Ely Stone Bridge. This bridge was built in 1893 by Ely Reuben, Sr and Ely Reuben, Jr for $455. In 1985 it was reconditioned by a Grandson for an undisclosed cost…. I was able to drive off road and under the bridge due to low water levels, which made for a great picnic with the Monkey. This trip was our 16th wedding anniversary along with the 5th anniversary of the date we ordering our Raven. This is becoming a great Day!
Ride Home – Oily Slim (215)
Best Stop – It’s really a toss up. The whole day was so much fun! Thank you for going to all this work to organize the Rally. Loon Lake was great, the Burger Bar was a ton of fun, the three water crossings were exciting, and the Hangingstone River was serenity at it’s finest. We couldn’t decide between an artistic pic or a water crossing photo so let me know if you want a water crossing shot.. the video is even better :)
Hotel Del Coronado San Diego – Urologist – San Diego (126)
Best Stop – Acapulco Mexican Restaurant Y Cantina in Old Town. They did not have enough parking on the street for the seven rigs so they made room in the entry courtyard for four rigs. They were gracious enough to comp us Three Huge Appetizer Platters. We also ordered the best Mexican food available in San Diego. We had a great lunch and shared many stories. The customers really liked our rigs. Too bad IMWA does not have the Emissary Program anymore. Luckily I had printed up a bunch of cards to hand out.
Cambridge Street in Boston – Mgtibb (241)
Best Stop – Stopped in downtown Boston with lots of UDF
A 1774 Colonial caught in the 21 Century – Liberty Rider (80)
Best Stop – While on the Jamestown Ferry, when a family traveling through the state came up and Tom, asked a lot of questions about Erika (bike). He then went and brought his wife over. It turned out she had grown up in Russia, in the Ural Mts no less. She’d remembered seeing motorcycles w/sidecars as a child and her grandfather had given her a ride in one he’d own when she was around 5 or 6. It’s a small world after all.

Best Stop – Holopaw Ural!! The Possum Werks!
Staff member at Logan’s graciously holds our Rally Flag, our first stop. – Stravonski (57)
Best Stop – Every stop was enjoyable, the photo from our dealer was classic, and dinner at Big Bellys BBQ was great, but the best for us was making it home safe after a long day on very bumpy dirt roads with heat, dust, and dirt, and getting a shower! 356km, the longest single day ride my wife and I have ever taken on our Gear-Up.
Um, Water Crossing? – NiteBlues (28)
Best Stop – Carranzza Monument. Seems a Mexican flew an airplane from Mexico City to New York City around the same time that Lindbergh flew to Paris. Of course, Lindbergh got all the press, but this fellow did a spectacular feat as well! Unfortunately when he left NYC, he got caught in a storm over the Pine Barrens and crashed and died. They built a monument to him right there. Every year (still!) the local fire department that searched for and found him have a ceremony on the day of the year that he crashed.

Best Stop – Drift Inn Saloon, Globe, AZ Great food, Beer and great prices.
– The Red Dennis (39)
Best Stop – Should be Best RIDE of the Day. Stopping is no fun! We had an EPIC ride yesterday. The rules stated that points were collectable from sunrise to sunset only and we adhered to those rules. In the time allotted, roughly 12 hours, we acquired 341 scoreable mileage points. In reality we rode for over 500 km and 15 hours. And we rode some GREAT routes, Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Cruz to well south of Big Sur, CA. But we didn’t stop there. Look up The Old Coast, we road it. Look up South Coast Road, we roade it. Look up Pacific Coast Highway, we rode it. And we had to go through Monterey and Santa Cruz to get there.

Our next to last stop at Brittania Restaurant in Asquith was great as well: we were all starving and the food and service were terrific. We were so hungry though that we neglected to photograph our food before it disappeared, so no bonus points….

Best Stop – Robert’s Lake for the finest cinnamon buns on the island, on route to our destination, Sayward.
Plural Urals. Mother Babushka and daughter Anklodge on 1998 Deco Classics – babushka (30)
Best Stop – That’s tough, but I guess it has to be the first Catholic church in Ohio. It was a log cabin built in 1817 in rural Dungannon. On the property is the brick church that replaced it in 1849. The priest was there unlocking the new church for 5:00 mass and gave us an amazing tour. He invited us to climb into the belfry and insisted I ring the bell!! It was a beautiful day filled with dramatic rain clouds that occasionally opened up on us adding to our weather adventure!

Best Stop – Talking with the folks at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch entrance gate. Regardless of whether you are a fan of his music, there is no denying the effect he had on people. While I was talking with security and taking pictures at least 4 separate cars pulled up and stopped. All were travelers, just trying to find the ranch so they can say they have been there. There are two painted saw-horse style road barriers by the gate all covered in hand written messages and condolences. They were all excited to learn about the Rally, UDF’s and the history of the bike. So they could be a part of the history and to commemorate their journey for my scrap book, I had everyone sign my Rally Flag. It was pretty cool.

Just down the road…the Old Bridge a creek runs under. – The Dome Roamers (294)
Best Stop – We enjoyed the whole day immensely. We rode our bikes all day, and loved it. The most engaging stop we agreed had to be when we stopped to get some BBQ. We saw many people as we were eating stop and look at the bikes, this is nothing new. They would come in after looking at the bikes and you could see on their faces they were trying to pick out the ones who rode those bikes, we just smiled at each other. When we were getting our helmets on a vehicle pulled up beside us and an older female got out of the passenger side and said, We have one of those just not with a side car though. My husband said a Ural, or a motorcycle? She said no a Ural. At that time her husband had made it out of the car and around to where we were. They lived not too far from us. The bike they had was a Solo 1996 model. They bought in 1998 from Mike’s Cycle and Marine. Well we stayed there and talked for a good 30 minutes. it was very enjoyable. A fella came out of the restaurant and said , Oh you 2 were the owners of these bikes? He was one of the ones looking at everyone trying to decide whose they were. We said Yup. We shared many laughs. Ural riders are an varied group of people. We love that.

It was smuggled out of Iraq in pieces by some ambitious military service personal. The side car was cut in half and rewelded here in the states. Mike has so many great stories about Ural’s beginnings here in the U.S. he is a true Ural lover and a great Ural Mechanic. The best part of the stop was when he sold me the rear rack off his personal rig and we mounted it for the mechanical adventure bonus.

Rally Day!

I hope everyone had a good rally today. I’d like to thank everyone who registered and everyone who rode today. Just getting folks interested in taking a ride makes this a success!

To report your scores just go to the Rally Score Sheet and fill out the form. The scoring form will be open until Midnight September 11 and I’ll be putting the scores together on Monday September 12. I hope to get the ranking list, scores, and list of drawing winners out Monday evening so hopefully you won’t need to wait too long.

I’ll post back with updates as I get stuff done

Almost There!

One more day to rally day.

Registration is now closed. I’ll be sending out the last emails with rally numbers and rally packets later today. We have gotten a few emails which bounced – so if you haven’t gotten your rally packet you can download the forms on the Rally Packet Page and find your rally number on the Rally Roster.

When you complete your rally you don’t need to send in your rally log, tomorrow there will be a Rally Score Sheet available here where you’ll report your score. We’re only asking for one picture from each rallier – your best picture – and with almost 300 registered rally riders that should be plenty for a good ride report!

I would encourage everyone who is interested to put together a ride report for the motorcycle forum you frequent (Soviet Steeds, Russian Iron, IMWA, ADV, etc).

And here’s a deal from Logan at Logan’s Valley Motorcycles -

Loan's Valley Motorcycles Rally Shirt

These Rally shirts can be purchased for $25ea. thru paypal, info@logansmc.com, just give him the size(mens sizes only sorry), figure $25 plus $4.95 shipping, total $29.95.
All proceeds from the sale of these shirts go directly back to those that purchased a shirt. If 100 people buy the shirt, $2500 in gift certificates go back to the players!!!
Also, you can check it out on Logan’s Valley Motorcycles Facebook page.

Everyone ride safe – See you on the road!

Prizes!

Security Director - Max

I know we’re all doing this for fun – but our friends at IMWA are putting up some actual swag for prizes. Here’s how this will work. When the rally is finished, and everyone has entered their final points I, and my security dreictor Max, will pull 30 names of rally finishers from a hat.  (you need 350 points to finish). We’ll send those names on to IMWA, and they’ll send out your prize. Just as a note – I am immune to bribes – but Max wanted me to mention that he can be bought with beef bones, catfish, fried eggs, or just about anything he can fit in his mouth.

Front

Back

Prize winners selected in the drawing will receive a special 70th anniversary T-Shirt from IMWA.

*the graphic on the prize watches might be a little different than shown here

And a couple of lucky Rally Riders will get a special prize – an IMZ  70th Anniversary Watch

We’ll send out an email to everyone who gets pulled in the drawing, and then the nice folks at IMWA will be sending our your prizes via snail mail.

But what do the high points finishers, high KM finishers, high pieces of pie finishers get?

Glory.

See you on the road.

Where are the Rally Riders?

So where are the folks riding this rally? Here’s a Google map of where folks are who’ve registered so far. Pretty good spread, I’m thinking.

Planning Your Rally Ride

So how to do plan for your rally ride? I did a practice ride yesterday, and we’ll use that as an example of one way to get your rally ride put together.

Pick  a Route

I use Google Maps – but any kind of mapping program will work. I pick four or five places  I’m going to hit – old bridges, roads I want to ride, places for lunch etc. I drop them into the Get Directions page on Google Maps – and it builds a route. If you need some inspiration on where to ride, check out the links in the Ride Research section on the right. The roads they pick are the ones that will get you there the quickest – so I zoom in and click on the route line, and drag it over to roads that look more interesting. You have to zoom way in to get the smaller roads.

Here’s the map I laid out for my ride yesterday.

Practice Rally Ride Map

These are the places I targeted for my practice ride

  • Camp Swift- Gate Guard Bonus
  • Park Road 1-C – Lonely Road Bonus
  • Rockne, TX  – Historic Site Bonus
  • R&G BBQ  – RTE BBQ Bonus
  • Moore’s Crossing Bridge – Bridge Bonus

It was about 200km (you can set Google to show in either miles of KM which is handy), and seemed reasonable. I figured I’d do a Pre-Ride check bonus, and Carb-draining bonus – and start off with 100 quick points – and probably get north  of 500 for the day with the mileage bonus.

So the next thing was to get my Rally stuff ready.

My Rally Packet

I printed my rally packet stuff – log sheet, rally flag, and bonus list. I used my PDF viewer to add my Rally number to my rally flag before I printed it – but you can just as easily scribble it in with a marker.

My Rally clipboard.

I just keep everything on a cheap clipboard. Use a rubber band (off my morning newspaper) on the bottom to keep the sheets from flapping in the wind. I also tie a string on my pencil to keep it from disappearing on me. The string does double duty to make a loop to hang the clipboard with my rally flag for bonuses where I need a photo.

Camera with a long string

I also use a lanyard make from a long piece of parachute cord to make a neck cord for my camera. That way I can keep it in my shirt pocket (inside my jacket) – and not have to fumble around for it when I’m trying to get a bonus. The manila envelope on the back of the clipboard is for receipts and stuff for rallies where you have to keep documentation.

Rally clipboard ready to go.

And then I just stick it down next to the car seat – and it’s handy whenever I stop.

The main thing for me is to keep it pretty simple – and make sure I can find the stuff I need when I need it.

Now time to Go Ride!

Riding Your Rally

So, enough planning. I’m going to go ride this (practice rally).

It’s going to be a hundred by noon today – so I’m starting early, and first thing is to get a couple of wrenching bonuses on the sheet so I get a quick bonus hit.

Draining the carbs

First I drain my carbs – I’m using the string my pencil is on to make a loop to hang my clipboard with my rally flag on the bars.

Airing the tires and checking the lights

Then I did the pre ride check – forgot my rally flag in this photo – dang it.

So then on the road. As I was riding out towards Camp Swift I remembered an old bridge on Manor Road – what the heck – that’s 50 points for a bridge bonus – I’ll pick that up.

1925 Pony Truss bridge on Old Manor Road

This is an old one lane bridge – they ran a new bridge next to it and left the old one in place – which is nice. It’s a little Pony Truss bridge.

Almost Lost

I missed my turn onto Monkey Road – but ended up on a road called Old Sawyer Road – which was a nice dirt road that ran out through a couple of cattle ranches – what the heck – getting lost is part of the fun – and dirt roads are worth 3 point/km – so I kept going.

Old Sawyer Road

This was a nice road – almost 10km of gravel and dirt – not too much washboard – but I did stop and check the nut on my spare a couple of times.

Even some wildflowers

There even were some wildflowers out – which is rare right now in Texas.

American Legion Post 533

So Old Sawyer Road took a big loop out to the west and missed Camp Swift completely. But as I went to pull into Bastrop State Park I spotted this M115 right across the street in front of an American Legion post – so I got the Gate Guard bonus I thought I’d missed.

My Rally Log

It was just 9:00am and I was getting a few things marked down on my Rally Log.

Park Road 1-C

All the signs were good for Park Road 1-C – Lonely Road Bonus.

Nice Saturday Morning Road

It was a nice ride, 17km, so 34 bonus points in the bag there.

I had some UDF in Smithville filling up with gas, and then cut around to another little road I wanted to pick up – Lower Red Rock Road – looked good on the map.

I still don't know what road this is.

Another wrong (or maybe right) turn and I was on 18km of dirt and gravel – 36 unexpected bonus points.  When I hit pavement I only had to ride about a mile to find a road sign and then a couple of minutes with the map and figured out how to get to my next stop – Rockne.

Rickne - Hilbig Park

Nice little historical park -this is the cabin of the founder of Rockne – Roger Lehman.  The community was called Lehmanville until the early 30′s – when the locals voted to rename the town Rockne after Notre Dame Football coach Knute Rockne. So the culture of celebrity isn’t as recent as I thought. And 25 points for a historical site.

R&G BBQ in McMahan

Then I shot down FM20/86 to McMahan for BBQ at R&G BBQ. I’d heard about this place – run by a guy who used to work at Luling City Market – but never made it down. I need an RTE bonus – so what the heck.

R&G BBQ Brisket and Sausage

And it was definitely a 50 point plate. The brisket was smoky tender, moist. The sausage was beef – natural casing – amazing. Really really good brisket develops something called a sugar cookie where the fat renders into a smoky layer of just creamy sweetness – good sugar cookie on these slices.

It was already over a hundred. So I decided not to ride into Lockhart – my original plan – and just ride back towards home (about 60 miles away now).

Moore's Crossing Bridge

But there was Moore’s Crossing Bridge – In 1884 this was the Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown Austin – the main bridge across the Colorado River. But one of the three spans of the bridge was destroyed in a 1915 flood – so they took down the remaining 2 spans and moved them here – on Onion Creek about twenty miles from the original bridge. It was in service until 1997 – and it wasn’t far off my route home – so I picked us these last 50 points on the way.

FInal Practice Rally Route

So this was my final Practice Rally Route. And the numbers are:

Bonus Time Start KM End KM Points
Wrenching – Drain Carbs 6:46 34351 50
Wrenching – Pre Ride Check 6:54 34351 50
Photo-Bridge – Old Manor Rd Bridge, Manor Rd 7:16 34358 50
Road – Lonely Road – Old TX 20/Monkey Rd 7:27 34363 34394 62
Road – Gravel – Old Sawyer Road 8:24 34394 34403 27
Gate Guard – American Legion Post 533 – M115 8″ Howitzer 8:56 34406 50
Road – Lonely – Park Road 1-C – Bastrop-Buescher Parks 9:14 34407 34424 34
UDF – Brookshire Brothers Gas10:1034424–25
Road – Lonely – Lower Red Rock Road 10:30 34440 34458 36
Historic Site – Hilbig Park – Lehman Cabin, Rockne, TX 11:00 34458 25
RTE – R&G BBQ, McMahan, TX 11:40 34473 50
UDF – R&G BBQ – Mennonite Family 11:40 34473 25
Bridge -Moore’s Crossing, TX 1:06 34521 50
HOME – end 1:55 34542
Mileage – Total for ride – 191 KM 191
TOTAL POINTS—– 725

That’s 13 bonuses in about a 7 hour ride, for a total of 725 points.

I took the GPS to track my running time, etc – and it looked like this:

  • 191 KM
  • 5:03 moving time
  • 2:08 stopped time
  • 32.5 mph moving average
  • 22.8 mph overall average

That seems in line with what I expected. This was a seven hour ride – and I expect to make about 33 mph average on the roads I ride on this kind of ride. Your mileage may vary – but I think just about anyone could easily do 500 points on this rally in a four or five hour ride. Someone who wants to crank it up could do the same easily by pounding down the kms.

It was a great – day – I’m anxious to see what other folks do on Rally Day.

Go Ride
